Were you amazed when Ron Paul and Newt Gingrich graced our out-of-the-way community? Historically speaking, famous people have always passed through – beginning with Lewis & Clark and never pausing. Check out these famous names who came in the mid-20th Century:

A wacky inventor, a future Indian prime minister, a beloved comedian, a formidable First Lady, and a steady parade of American presidents all visited the Tri-Cities in the 1950s and 60s. The photographic proof can be found at the Franklin Country Historical Society Museum.

  • President Franklin Roosevelt is depicted sitting in a car munching a sandwich while inspecting the construction of the Grand Coulee Dam in 1937.
  • President Truman, with First Lady Bess behind him, is depicted dedicating the Pasco Elk’s Club in 1950.
  • Presidents Eisenhower and Johnson depicted sitting stately behind decorated podiums, dedicate McNary and Ice Harbor Dams.
  • President John F. Kennedy depicted charismatically addressing a crowd as far as the eye can see at Hanford in 1963.
  • Comedian extraordinaire Bob Hope with a golf club in one hand and a local beauty in the other at a Columbia Basin College golf event.
  • First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt at CBC.
  • Future Prime Minister of India Indira Gandhi at CBC.
  • Quirky inventor “Bucky Ball” Fuller at CBC.
