Rod Stewart Wants to Tour With Elton John

They’ve known one another for years and even worked together on occasion, but Rod Stewart and Elton John‘s long friendship has never led to a full-fledged tour — something Stewart would like to rectify before it’s too late.

Stewart, who presented John with the inaugural Brits Icon Award on Sept. 2 before the duo performed a duet, later told reporters that he’s hoping their performance is just the prelude to a whole series of live dates. “We did do a duet on one of my ‘Great American Songbook’ albums, but really I’d love to — before we’re both in wheelchairs — go out and do a tour together,” Stewart said. “I’d love to do that.”

But John’s recent admission that he’d like to cut back on touring might put a damper on any plans.

In the meantime, Stewart has a full slate of touring commitments to get through, including a run of European shows in September and a U.S. package tour with Steve Winwood in October, as well as a string of Vegas dates in between. And then there’s the matter of following up his most recent LP, ‘Time,’ which found Stewart co-writing original material for the first time in years. Asked if he planned to keep writing, Stewart shrugged, saying, “I’m slated to do a country album. I mean, it’s probably the only genre I haven’t covered.”
