Sunbanks Rhythm & Blues Fest Is Fun Even Below Water — I SCUBA in Banks Lake

Looking for treasure in a man-made lake is a dubious endeavor unless the endeavor IS the treasure.

Banks Lake is a Bureau of Reclamation body of water, part of the Columbia Basin Project and fed by Grand Coulee Dam from the Columbia River via Lake Roosevelt. It is actually quite clear until you disturb the lake bed and was nicely warmed from a summer of sun. The air in my aluminum 80 tank was decades old but research said it was safe after a sniff test. So the adventure began with the Sunbanks Rhythm & Blues Festival as the backdrop. Never going below 15 feet I emerge from the depths about 45 minutes later with a fine collection of waterborne items: an anchor (I can use that), a ladies pair of sunglasses and a kill switch lanyard that shuts off your jet ski if you fall off. Not a bad haul considering I would have been happy just to hang out below the water and see a few fish. MISSION: Accomplished!

It’s been a long time since I hefted an Aluminum 80 tank and back pack down to the water. Whew! It was worth it though in the fairly clear waters of Banks Lake. Check out Scotty’s awesome tie-dyed canopy walls in the background! (Lon Martin)
